Sexual Assault Prevention Month is an annual campaign that generates public awareness, educates prevention initiatives within your community, and encourages educators and victims to openly share information with others.
If you don’t know how to get involved, however, here are some helpful options:
#1: Follow RAINN on Social Media
The Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN) has profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, all of which make it simple to bring sexual assault awareness directly to your newsfeed. Consider liking, sharing, and even commenting on the channels throughout Sexual Assault Prevention Month to spread the word.
#2: Learn About the Local Safe Places
Know beforehand where to go in case you’re ever in a situation where you have been assaulted—and get information about where you can send others to feel safe.
#3: Create a Code Word for Your Friends
Creating a code word will allow your friends to notify you if there’s a problem without coming out and saying it. This is particularly important if their assailant is nearby or they are struggling to communicate what happened.
#4: Discuss Consent with the Men in Your Life
Teen and college-age boys, in particular, need to understand consent. Make sure you discuss it on a regular basis with the young men you know and love. Help them understand that the lack of a no does not necessarily imply consent—and give them the right information to understand what does.
#5: Donate or Volunteer
Choose an organization, like RAINN, that supports victims of sexual violence or assault. Then, find a way to give back to that organization. You may choose to volunteer or to donate funds. No matter how you choose to get involved, keep sharing information, so your friends and family will also understand more about sexual assault prevention.
