There is no criminal courthouse in Mississauga. Criminal charges laid in the city are heard in Brampton, at the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse, 7755 Hurontario Street. Peel Regional Police polices Mississauga from three divisions and has its headquarters at 7150 Mississauga Road, and the city's own court at 950 Burnhamthorpe Road West deals only with tickets and other provincial offences.
This page covers what is specific to Mississauga: which building handles what, the three police divisions, the city's ticket court, collisions and the local numbers. For guides by charge, start from our criminal defence practice areas.
What happens in Mississauga, and what happens in Brampton?
A Mississauga case starts in Mississauga and is decided in Brampton, often without a trip there for the early dates. The table follows a typical adult case.
| Step | Where | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Arrest and charge | A Peel Regional Police division in Mississauga: 11, 12 or 31 | Reports are taken at divisions, not at headquarters |
| 2. Release or bail | From the scene, the holding facility or a bail hearing | A person held goes before a justice within 24 hours if one is available (Criminal Code s. 503) |
| 3. First appearance | Brampton courthouse, by internet or telephone | Peel police tell accused people not to attend case management in person |
| 4. Disclosure | Brampton Crown's office, by email | Federal drug charges go to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada instead |
| 5. Pre-trials and trial | 7755 Hurontario Street, Brampton | Judicial pre-trials by video; trials in person unless a judge orders otherwise |
| Tickets | 950 Burnhamthorpe Road West, Mississauga | Provincial offences only, not criminal charges |
If a lawyer is retained by the first appearance, or within four weeks of it, the case is usually adjourned about 12 weeks, never more than three months, while the Crown screens the file and provides disclosure. A Crown pre-trial may then be held in person, by phone or by email, and our guide to what happens at a judicial pre-trial explains the meeting with the judge that usually follows.
Why is a Mississauga criminal case heard in Brampton?
The province's court directory lists no court location in Mississauga, and the Peel Region courthouse it does list is in Brampton. Peel Regional Police's court information page lists three court locations: the Grenville and William Davis Court House in Brampton for the Ontario Court of Justice, and the two city provincial offences courts in Brampton and Mississauga. The Superior Court of Justice also sits at 7755 Hurontario Street, so a Mississauga case stays in that building even if it goes to a jury.
In practice the trip is often avoided early on. Case management dates in Brampton are run remotely, by internet or phone. Our guide to what to expect at the Brampton courthouse lists the courtrooms, the call-in number and the Crown's disclosure email. For a Criminal Code charge, the disclosure request goes to [email protected]; if you have no photo identification or secure email, Peel police say to call the Brampton Crown Attorney's office at 905-456-4777.
Which police division covers Mississauga?
| Location | Address | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 11 Division | 3030 Erin Mills Parkway, Mississauga | Also a Collision Reporting Centre; neighbourhood policing ext. 1108 |
| 12 Division | 4600 Dixie Road, Mississauga | Neighbourhood policing ext. 1203 |
| 31 Division | 2951 Convair Drive, Mississauga | Ext. 3100 |
| Headquarters | 7150 Mississauga Road, Mississauga | All legal documents for the police are delivered here; reports are not taken here |
Extensions are on the automated line, 905-453-2121; the general non-emergency number is 905-453-3311. Police record checks have a Mississauga location (ext. 1129). Reports can only be made at a division or community station, not at headquarters.
What if someone is held for bail?
Police who keep a person in custody must bring them before a justice without unreasonable delay, and within 24 hours where a justice is available (Criminal Code, s. 503(1)). Peel Regional Police's court page says a bail hearing is held when the charge is serious, such as robbery, weapons offences or murder, or when conditions are needed for a safe release or there is a concern about attending court. Superior Court bail hearings and reviews for Peel are booked through the Brampton trial office. Before a family member agrees to supervise, they should read what a surety agrees to in Ontario.
Where do Mississauga traffic tickets go?
To the City of Mississauga's provincial offences court at 950 Burnhamthorpe Road West, L5C 3B4, open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. Its Provincial Offences Office phone line is 905-615-4500. A Highway Traffic Act ticket is not a criminal charge. An impaired driving charge under the Criminal Code is, and it goes to the Brampton courthouse with every other criminal case from the city. A lower reading in the warn range is different again; read what happens after a warn-range reading in Ontario.
What happens after a collision in Mississauga?
Peel Regional Police require a collision with more than $5,000 in combined damage to be reported at a Collision Reporting Centre; two of the centres it lists are in Mississauga, at 11 Division and at headquarters. If the vehicle can be driven, you have 48 hours to report. Police come to the scene instead when a collision involves criminal activity, a suspended driver or a vehicle without insurance, and that is where a collision can turn into a criminal case.
What do the local numbers show?
Statistics Canada counted 717,961 people in Mississauga in the 2021 census, slightly fewer than the 721,599 counted in 2016. Peel Regional Police reports fatal collisions in Mississauga of 18 in 2020, 18 in 2021 and 16 in 2022. It also publishes year-to-date crime counts for the whole service, covering Mississauga and Brampton together:
| Peel Regional Police | Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 2025 | Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 2026 | 2025 full year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robberies | 555 | 347 | 830 |
| Break and enters | 1,843 | 1,382 | 2,815 |
| Theft of motor vehicles | 3,548 | 3,233 | 5,280 |
| Theft from motor vehicles | 2,295 | 3,559 | 3,859 |
| Sexual violations | 997 | 854 | 1,353 |
These are service-wide counts. They say nothing about how any one case will be decided.
What changes the answer in a Mississauga case?
- How you were released. Peel police explain that an undertaking from the holding facility can carry conditions set by the officer in charge. Breaking a condition is its own offence (Criminal Code s. 145).
- Custody. Some charges and records put the onus on the accused to show why release is justified (s. 515(6)); see how bail hearings work in Ontario.
- How the Crown proceeds. Summary or indictable sets the maximum sentence and the route. Read what the Crown's choice changes.
- Your election. On most indictable charges the accused chooses a provincial court judge, a judge without a jury, or a judge and jury (s. 536(2) and (2.1)). Our guide on choosing a judge or a jury weighs the options.
- Immigration status. For a permanent resident, an either-way offence counts as indictable even if the Crown proceeds summarily (IRPA s. 36(3)(a)). See what a charge can mean for permanent resident status.
For example: a no-contact condition after a call to a Mississauga home
This is a hypothetical, not a real client or a result. Suppose police are called to a home in Mississauga after an argument between spouses, and the husband, a permanent resident, is charged with assault. He is released from the holding facility on an undertaking with a condition not to contact his wife and not to return home. His wife, who is more at ease in Farsi, wants him back and calls a lawyer on his behalf.
The lawyer explains in Farsi that the condition binds him even though his wife wants him home: a police undertaking can be varied only with the written consent of the accused and the Crown, or by a justice (Criminal Code s. 502). The first appearance is in Brampton, by internet or phone. The lawyer requests disclosure from the Brampton Crown and looks at whether the no-contact condition can be changed. Because he is a permanent resident, every possible outcome is weighed against his status before any resolution. Had the call been to a home across the boundary in Toronto, the case would go to 10 Armoury Street instead.
What mistakes do people make after a Mississauga charge?
- Going to the Burnhamthorpe Road court. 950 Burnhamthorpe Road West hears tickets. A criminal charge from Mississauga is heard in Brampton.
- Trying to make a report at headquarters. Peel police take reports at divisions and community stations, not at 7150 Mississauga Road.
- Treating a condition as a family matter. The complainant's wish for contact does not lift a no-contact condition; only a variation does.
- Waiting for duty counsel on the day. Peel police note duty counsel cannot guarantee same-day help; ask for disclosure first and call well before the court date.
- Missing a date. The court may issue a warrant. See what to do after a missed court date.
What can you do this week?
- Read your release paper for the court date, which will be at the Brampton courthouse, and every condition.
- Ask the Brampton Crown for disclosure by email, or let your lawyer do it.
- Speak with a lawyer, in Farsi or English, before the first appearance and before any police interview.
- Tell your lawyer about your immigration status, travel plans and any family court case.
- Gather your papers with the first-week checklist after a criminal charge.
Where is the guide for each stage of a Mississauga case?
Our guides apply Ontario law; where an address is in Toronto, the Mississauga step is in Brampton.
- The first date: what happens at a first court appearance.
- Must you be there: attending court yourself or through your lawyer.
- Arrested on a weekend: when a bail hearing happens after a weekend arrest.
- The evidence: how disclosure works in Ontario.
- Comparing offers: withdrawals, peace bonds, discharges and convictions.
- After a withdrawal: what a police record check shows.
- An old conviction: record suspension waiting periods.
- Budgeting: what drives the cost of a criminal defence.
What if the charge was laid outside Mississauga?
A charge laid in Brampton goes to the same courthouse, through Brampton's own divisions; see criminal cases in Brampton. A charge laid across the boundary in Toronto involves a different police service and different courts; see criminal defence in Toronto.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to travel to Brampton for my first court date?
Usually not. Peel police tell accused people with case management dates to attend over the internet or by telephone. Trials and preliminary inquiries are in person unless a judge orders otherwise.
Can I get a Farsi interpreter for my Brampton court date?
Yes. Ontario provides court interpretation in any language required in criminal matters, and section 14 of the Charter gives an accused or witness who does not understand the proceedings the right to an interpreter. Ask early, through your lawyer.
Where do I get a police record check in Mississauga?
Peel Regional Police's records service has a Mississauga location, reached through 905-453-2121 ext. 1129.
Does Legal Aid Ontario help callers in Farsi?
Legal Aid Ontario's toll-free line, 1-800-668-8258, says it offers help in over 300 languages, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Peel police give the same number for duty counsel.
Do you meet clients from Mississauga in Farsi?
Yes. Consultations and courtroom representation are available in English and Farsi, from our office at 5000 Yonge Street in North York. You can call, use the contact form or send a WhatsApp message.
Getting help
Gambriani Law PC works in English and Farsi from Suite 1901, 5000 Yonge Street in North York, and lists the Brampton courthouse among the courts it appears in most often. Our guide for Persian-speaking people charged in the GTA explains how a case runs when you are more at ease in Farsi. An early call leaves time to get disclosure and to deal with any release condition that is hard to live with.
